Session 8

I do tend to have poor reading habits, i skip over a lot of words and skim to the main points but while i skip the main points i tend to overlook some key factors. Now i just read with my finger so i dont skip out on any words. Reading with my finger on the words is much better because firstly it helps me keep track of where i am and secondly i never skip anything. It has helped me in this course because now i dont skip over words.

Session 7

My note taking has been very sporractic over the years, it has been all over the place. Sometimes i write good notes and sometimes i dont, mostly i dont write notes at all and its because i lose focus quickly and lose interest in writing notes and tend to rely on others to get them for me. I have mainly used the notes to record facts that the prof writes down.

There are many effective ways to improve the note taking such as underlining key points, identifying key points and mind mapping. All 3 will improve the note taking drastically. Mind mapping is good for visual learners such as myself and i find that most effective.

As i mind mapped chapter 5 and summarized it into key points i found it very effective indeed, i am not new to mind mapping and have used it many times before. I think that what it does it seperates the foundation points and the points that are side information. The key concept is understood when mind mapping and the branches along the main points is what is remembered once the main point is remembered.

Session 6

The comments that rang a bell were the agenda and schedule planner, i used them before and found that they were very useful at the time, now i stopped using it as i now am accustomed to delivering on time and organizing my things to do. I don't believe i am fully effective at managing my time but i do believe that i have gotten much better over the years, there is always room for improvement and as humans we always make mistakes but with practice and experience we can get a lot better. Time management is a skill as it does take time to master, no one can achieve it in a day.

Smart goals are important because they provide a plan, an easy plan that can be followed by anyone, it can be used for specific goals and achieved within a time frame. During my research based on how effective students are at planning i found that students who planned much ahead of time eg: beginning of semester performed alot better than the ones who didn't plan or planned late. Students beliefs in thier efficacy for self regulated learning affected their perceived self- efficacy for academic achievement, which in turn influenced the academic goals they set for themselves and thier final academic achievement. It is clear to see that students who used smart goals and star goals achieved at a much higher level than the rest. It goes to say without doubt that when you plan ahead you know what to expect and so then you have time to prepare.

My long term goals are to be an amateur boxer, get my degree and to have a sturdy job while doing the things i love to do such as my hobbies.

Mid term goals: Achieve A+ in all the summer courses im taking.

Short term goal: Get through the summer courses to enjoy my summer!

The 15 minute interval challenge, my intentions are to record what im doing every 15 minutes regardless of what it is and then add up the total to see what i spend the most time doing, i can adjust my planning based on days and what i need to do, i feel like this could be an excellent way of challenging myself and improving as it tells me exactly where the root of the problem lies if im doing one thing too much. I can spend more time studying etc if i feel like im spending too much time watching tv.

The resources are very useful, and its essential that all universities have these tools available to students at any time. I can see myself using the online workshop, drop in learning centre and academic zone. I have indeed considered my learning style, as im visual i think that dropping into learning centres would be key, they present the material on the board which is visual and its on a big wide board which makes it easier to see and learn, its a clearer aspect on things. Learning in a group is a big thing to, as discussion brings up points to think about as oppose to just reading by yourself.

I think a planner would not benefit me to be honest, and this is because i have used one in the past but i never really used it or forgot to use it, i just write down a list on an empty sheet day by day and i feel thats more effective to me.

Learning profile: I am a visual learner so i have come to realise the best way to learn for me is by looking.
Thinking and reflection skills: Over the past 6 weeks i have greatly understood the value of reflecting upon a context that is provided in order to get the most out of it.
Problem solving strategies: To solve the problem to its core you must understand the foundation and this can be achieved by disecting and analyzing the question.
Ways to improve memory: Different tactics through out the book that have been listed, acronyms for me work the best.
Planning and time management: Easily the most common mistake, in order to be successful one must plan ahead of time.

After one week of monitoring my time i discovered that i spend too much time with the tv.
I want to spend more time on applying for jobs.
I want to spend less time on games and internet.
I was surprised that i spend so much time on loafting

Session 5

A list of things to do in order to concentrate:

No noise
No distraction
Prioritize tasks
Get through the list you formed
Turn off the phone
Set a time
Set a day
Spend minimum time online

Ofcourse, it is very difficult to set up these tasks without any obstacles in the way such as the daily ones we go through. In order to eliminate such distractions we must be willing to give up a lot of things such as partying late, sleeping in, wasting time, spending time on the internet. All these combined are very deadly to a successful lifestyle.
Reducing interference is can be done easily, simply sit in a quiet room without your phone and give yourself a break every 45 minutes to be fair. This way you will have motivation to complete the work and in turn complete a lot by the time the break comes. Setting a time and day is very crucial aswell, if performed properly it can enhance our learning skills tenfold, this is because when the mind is focusing on something or knows something needs to be done at a specific time it will do anything to set time for that goal. When studying alot of context, its easier to go through the main points first and then the side notes. Once your brain understands the foundation, everything else becomes easier. As for room mates its better to pair up with people with similar minds or goals, so that everybody has an understanding as to when to be quiet and respect that.

Learning styles im used to:                                      Learning styles i should use;
Learn it once actively.                                              Be selective
Recite and Repeat                                                    Create assosciations
Write it down                                                           Categorize
Overlearn                                                                 Create Pictures

COR- CREATE, OVERLEARN,REPEAT
BON- BE AWARE, OVERLEARN, NOTICE
WOE- WRITE, OVERLEARN, ELOBORATE

I belive that overlearning will help me a alot, and so will creating pictures, as i am a visual learner, images will boost my memory and make me remember more often as i have an image to come back to with related information. Over learning, by learning everything about a specific subject even though time consuming will never do me wrong. I tried creating images as a learning tactic and found it very useful, it was helpful in the sense that i kept an image in my head and kept going back to it when i forgot something and once reminded of that image i was able to recall the other information.

The time i had trouble remembering something was when i had lost my i pod, i didnt feel a particular way but obviously no ones likes losing anything. I found it a few days later after i remembered where i kept it, i guess the mind sometimes is clouded with different things that it forgets simple things like where it kept something. 3 memory strategies that would obviously be helpful to develop would be create associations, use your time of peak energy and practice retrieval of information frequently.

I intend to practise them by simply doing them the next time i have an oppotunity to do so, for example creating associations is not hard its just a matter of actually creating something you can associate to. Peak time is when your mind and body can handle anything thats thrown at it which includes studying, this i will develop and lastly practise retrieval, this is something everyone should do but sometimes given circumstances its not always the case.

Session 4

I believe I have truth seeking, open minded and systematic attitudes of a critical thinker. Truth seeking because I do feel that getting to the end of a problem is the key to taking something to the next step, even if we don't like the outcome we can only progress through certain aspects. It is essential to have a full understanding on the whole situation and the only way to do this is truth seeking which I have never been afraid of. Open minded because I never judge someone or something before finding out his or her points of view and maybe I am wrong and that person is right so I always hold a slot open for another persons views or opinion, I never shut it out completely. I am one who will admit im wrong if proven wrong. I believe im systematic simply because when I explain something I start from the very beginning and end off so that I leave no questions unanswered. I give step by step points leading to the end. In a debate or conversation its always necessary to give evidence to back up what you said. I tend to always say where I got my source from or how I reached the conclusion.\
I would like to cultivate the Mature attitude and self confident, maturity because sometimes its too early to predict or reach a conclusion without knowing more information and I feel like I skip a lot of info that is needed to hasten the destination of the conclusion. If I can take my time and wait and have patience I feel like this could benefit me more in the long run. Self confidence because this is a very key aspect in anyone's life, to achieve something you must have total self confidence and the ability not to doubt yourself. Sometimes in university life I would tend to think I know the information after reading it once although I need more time on it. If I can master fully understanding something before moving on it would benefit me greatly.
I believe I could achieve this by exposing myself to certain disciplines which I usually wouldn't dwell in, such as for self confidence I would take time to read something and come back to it an hour later, and keep repeating this method till it became a habit.

From viewing the video, I believe the professor is correct, it really depends on the given circumstance of the situation, you can not label people into different learning styles just by one performance or many performances leading to the same outcome. There will be a circumstance where that specific learner learns a different way. Critical thinking allows the learner to evaluate the whole situation before stepping foot into something, the professor talks about how a good teacher is a good teacher, I whole heartedly agree because it is very common to mistake good teaching as someone who has been labeled as a visual learner etc. Using critical thinking there is no labels its a total recall of the situation and assessing it thoroughly before starting the process.

The time I was creative was when I had the idea at paintballing, my strategy was to go around the enemy by means of stealth. It stemmed from when both teams were at a stale mate and we needed to advance in order to win. I had to think of something, and so I had the creative idea of dividing and conquering. The experience of being creative gave an essence of leadership, it gave me that feeling of control, because displaying your idea to a number of people while in a hectic situation is a feeling of control. I foster my creativity because in a time where nothing is at peace or your heart is pacing fast there is an essence of leadership and control, this is very hard to do especially if your mind is focused on the game. As you know paintball is not easy and requires skill not to be hit, I encourage leadership and control to overcome obstacles which was our opposition at the time. This can be used in life to, to accomplish something you must be willing to face the fear. A lot of things can block your creativity such as shyness, fear or lack of direction. These are road blocks stopping us from our destination. In order to pass these road blocks we must be willing to do something we usually don't do.

Key information on virtual tour: Connection to practice, connection to theory, creative thinking skills, thinking outside the box, questioning skills, problem solving.

Session 3

Befriend Discomfort

Personally I don't like to be challenged, I get flustered and stressed pretty easy. I put important things off simply because  I get overwhelmed. Befriending discomfort would be a key aspect to work on.
Having a positive attitude and looking at the challenge as a growing opportunity is key. My favourite quote being
"Discomfort can be a gift- an opportunity to do valuable work on yourself. On the other side of discomfort lies mastery." Ph. 57

Step 1
Pick Something I would like to change

I would like to change the fact that I am heavily weighed down by school debt. I want to start paying off my debt.

Step 2

My wish to my fairy god mother would be simply to pay the loans although there is a part of me that wants to do it myself. My wish to her would be to help me make enough so I can continue to pay off my loans. In a perfect world I would want to pay them off in a year.

Step 3

Having a full time job would be wonderful, putting at least 200 dollars a week towards my loans. So that within a few years I would be debt free and not have to pay any interest.

Step 4
One a week (after pay day) I will put a lump sum (goal 55 dollars) towards my loan. It seems small but right now that is the best I can do. Staying positive and not spending my money on things I don't need is key.

My learning style reflects pretty decently in practice as I always make use of visual aid to help me focus and hone in on what I really need to know, ultimately in exams and other projects I always tend to use the visual learning style method and draw out what I hear or see written in words. It does fit very easily in my learning style as I have never used any other learning styles such as auditory or kinesthetic when not needed. My fall back has always been visual.

Seeing my journal entry in the way it was posted on wordle is interesting as it highlights and increase the font size on certain words, this could be a great method when noting down key words and important features. Standing out from the rest of the text is what gets the brain to register that point. As a learner it implies that due to the fact I do like this method, I actually find it useful because highlighting certain words helps me remember that specific point.

After completing the discovery wheel, I found that a skill I possess is attitude, this is because I do plan a lot and set days on which I will do this and still have time for that. I usually always plan review much before the exam date so I have a lot of time to prepare. As I come near the end of my academic year I have used this skill to my advantage many times and found it a very useful skill to possess. The one skill I need to improve on or have more exposure to is diversity, sometimes I feel its tough for me to diversify myself to new crowds or even to individuals. It takes me time and I know a lot of people can adjust pretty fast, I need more experience and I feel maybe facing the fear itself is the only way to become efficient in this skill such as public speaking or talking as a leader. Chapter 9 diversity, the 3 articles I will read at a later date are 'Overcome stereotypes critical thinking', 'Leadership in a diverse world' and 'Master student profile Trey Anthony' I intend to read these articles this weekend.

Session 2

My first impressions of the LSI outcome were not surprising at all, it said i was a visual learner which to the most part i am. I've always learnt through looking at material or context and then reading it. The only part which might have struck me as something i might do which was not stated was that i am also a hands on learner in the sense that i learn by doing mostly. For example exams i always tend to do better if i had attempted previous questions. Again maybe the visual learner in me is stronger and i learn faster by looking at maps or graphs and seeing exactly whats being played out step by step. For the course that im in which is Economics, there tends to be a lot of graphs and numerical s so in order to succeed i must practice a lot and look at what i am supposed to be doing. Most teachers i have worked with in Brock tend to teach visually and auditory. I do believe it would be a lot more beneficial if teachers implemented the kinisthetic  form of teaching as its good practice. Personally i would prefer it.
Moving on the multiple intelligence test, when i took the test again i wasn't surprised at the results, i was mainly a visual smart person or picture smart. This correlates with the LSI test i took, The first part of the video where he states that a student can get a very good grade on the test but a year later there's nothing is very true. A test can only examine your knowledge for the time being but it doesn't sustain memory for long. He says that constant learning of the material where the student carries on more than just an exam is what really sticks in the mind. I do very strongly agree with when he says universities or schools have one system of teaching and that not every student learns the same way the teacher teaches, everyone is different and because of this its very unfair to students to all learn the same way. Continuing on this point i agree with his statement that there is more than one way to teach a child, essentially to reach out to different children you must first see whats their specific region of learning. He then talks about really learning in detail about a topic, most students learn alot of context but its meaningless it wont do them much good, its the key concept behind it to really question anything that is said to learn what evidence is there about this topic and so on, I do believe my dominant intelligence would be mathematics as i strongly excel in this field. My mind is more numerically adjusted to numbers and figures. I can do this with ease.
Using the VAK questionnaire i was determined as visual once again, with a score of 5. I guess now it is very clear that i am a visual learner and to use this to my advantage is by learning more visually as oppose to any other way. To become a true master student one must be a multimodal learner. If my material is presented in any other way i would then have to modify it so its visual and i can see it.

Session 1

I feel like having a blog for this course is not necessary but this is my medium in which i want to relay my journals. I really enjoyed having a blog, as it is so easy and organized so this is my journal. Like much in my life I have left starting this course to the last minute, ultimately falling behind and indeed stressing myself out. I must admit though I have  changed over the years, staying up and doing papers the night before just doesn't appeal to me like they used to. Saying this I feel as if I am slowly but surely becoming an Adult Learner. There are 12 characteristics of an adult learner and I would have to say that these three characteristics really define me:

#6 expects to use personal experiences as a resource
#7 Needs encouragement and support
#11 Enjoys socializing and interacting in small groups

Posting - Pg. 5 of the text Reconnaissance

The thing that I am am looking forward to most is understanding the steps of becoming a master student. Managing my time would be a key aspect that I would like to grasp as I know that time management would be my down fall.
While doing the reconnaissance I really liked pg. 195 " what to do before the test" testing is my strongest area of study. I really need to study as I can get a little overwhelmed and nervous. Having a set review that speaks to my own individual learning will definitely help. Being in forth year I believe I have grasped the main ideas of thinking critically although there is always room for improvement. I am looking forward to being able to learn these skills and use them as a life long learner.

Pg. 7 Commitment Exercise

I would have to say that my commitment level would be 9.5, to say level 10 would be great but realistically knowing that I have other courses, a job and a fitness goal making this text book my life would be difficult. What I can tell you is this, I am very excited to using this course and text book to my ultimate advantage as I wish that I was aware of such a class when I first entered university. Utilizing my strengths and understanding how to work with my weaknesses while bettering my education is my main goal.
